How category-based selection works
IRCC may invite candidates from the Express Entry pool who meet a defined category, alongside its general draws. Categories have covered groups such as healthcare occupations, STEM occupations, trades and strong French-language ability. Candidates are still ranked by CRS, but only within the eligible group.
Why it matters below the general cut-off
Because the eligible group is smaller, cut-off scores in a category draw can sit below those in a general draw. For a candidate whose occupation or language profile matches an announced category, that difference can be the practical route to an invitation.
Checking your eligibility for a category
Eligibility depends on meeting the published criteria for the category in force at the time of the draw — typically qualifying work experience in listed occupations, or a defined French test result, in addition to meeting an Express Entry program's requirements.
- Confirm your occupation's NOC code against the category's listed occupations
- Check the qualifying experience period and where it was gained
- Ensure test results and profile entries are current
- Re-check categories each year — they are set annually
Confirm before you plan around it
Categories, eligible occupations and criteria are announced by IRCC and can change. Verify the current categories on the IRCC website rather than relying on previous rounds.
